California State University San Marcos Fuels Campus Engagement with Impactree

San Marcos

College students are busy people. Between class, studying, work and trying to keep a social life, many university students have completely packed schedules. Simply put, many students don’t have the time to participate in off campus activities, and this is especially true of volunteering and helping their communities.

With a dearth of free time, students have a hard time making a positive impact in their communities and planet, and campuses have taken note. In the midst of the Covid pandemic especially, many universities were looking for a way to engage students’ desire to do good while helping them feel connected to their (remote) student body.

This is where California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) found themselves, wanting to simplify the act of making a positive change while building community around collective action. They found a solution to this issue through Impactree, using our civic engagement platform as a place to collect actions addressing a variety of social, political and ecological issues.

Impactree and CSUSM are Building Engagement

"Utilizing the Impactree online civic platform has allowed for CSUSM students to engage in civic advocacy on topics of interest to them, along with engaging with their peers to take action together during Action Parties."

Together, Impactree and CSUSM have made action and engagement much easier for students, despite many classes remaining remote. With the Impactree platform, students can take action on the issues they are most passionate about, finding a variety of ways to become educated, motivated and impactful.

To motivate more action and create a sense of collective impact, CSUSM hosted an Action Party on June 18th for all students to take action on today’s important social issues, specifically the Juneteenth holiday. In only a short amount of time, 40 students completed and shared almost 300 actions addressing racial justice, along with education, gender equity, climate, and much more.

So far, CSUSM has motivated a great amount of action using the Impactree platform, and we are thrilled with the results. CSUSM’s Department of Service Learning and Civic Engagement has planned to continue using Impactree for campus engagement, and we are extremely excited to continue working into the future. “By hosting monthly action parties and partnering with student organizations, Impactree will eliminate the barrier of time and being in-person for civic engagement by fostering online advocacy and civic awareness on social matters.”
